Rabbi Schachar Orenstein became our new rabbi in January 2025, all the way from Montreal!

Rabbi Orenstein succeeds founding Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow, who retired in 2023 after 29 years inspiring our congregation. This marks an exciting new chapter in the synagogue's rich history, as Rabbi Orenstein brings a dynamic and creative approach to Jewish life and learning that aligns with Shir Hadash’s core values: community, creativity, and caring.

Born in Israel and raised in Canada, the multi-lingual Rabbi Orenstein has a distinguished career guiding some of that nation’s most prominent and historic congregations. He is best known for his innovative approach to religious ritual and practice.

“We are thrilled to welcome Rabbi Schachar Orenstein to Shir Hadash,” said Lisa Settler, Executive Vice President. “His passion for music, innovative programming, and his inclusive approach to community building will be invaluable as we continue to grow, evolve and thrive. We are confident that Rabbi Orenstein will inspire and lead us with warmth, compassion and creativity, and keep us connected with our core values.”

Rabbi Emeritus Eitan Weiner-Kaplow, who served the synagogue for nearly three decades, shared his excitement about Rabbi Orenstein’s appointment. “He is a perfect fit for the congregation, drawing on his tremendous experience, deep Jewish knowledge, creative and progressive ideas, and spiritual musicality,” he said.

“I am deeply honored to join Shir Hadash,” Rabbi Orenstein remarked. “I look forward to co-creating a vibrant and sacred community where we can celebrate our traditions and embrace new ways to connect, learn, and grow together.”

Shir Hadash is excited to work with Rabbi Schachar on bringing his innovative ideas to life for our next chapter, and we are looking forward to introducing him to our larger Jewish community in Chicagoland!
