Our Philosophy

Our School
Our child-centered, experiential programs inspire children with the joy of Judaism. Children thrive in our open, creative, welcoming, nurturing environment.

Pre-kindergarten through 7th grade classes meet once a week, on Sunday mornings at the Hellenic American Academy in Deerfield. Our three-hour Sunday program includes the study of Torah, prayer, Jewish living skills, celebrations, the arts, history, culture, ethics, values and Hebrew. Post-b’nai mitzvah students study twice monthly on Monday nights with Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow and Education Director Emily Ascher.

The curriculum for each grade has been carefully designed by the education committee and education director with guidance from Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow, to engage children at their age-appropriate level. Teaching methods vary to meet the needs of all children, with the understanding that each child is an individual with a unique set of strengths and interests.
The following seven core values of Shir Hadash are integrated into all aspects of our school:

Kedusha (Holiness)
Pursuing spirituality in our lives

Hochma (Wisdom)
Enriching Jewish life through the study of Jewish sacred texts, history,
language, literature and civilization

Kehilla (Community)
Connecting students and parents together in a caring and sharing larger Jewish “family”

Derech Eretz (Thoughtfulness)
Being a mensch; behaving with kindness, compassion, respect, dignity and sensitivity

Tikkun Olam (Healing the World)
Improving the lives of others, the environment and the world around us

Hidur Mitzvah (Beauty)
Elevating life, worship and learning through the creative arts

Ahavat Yisrael (Love of Israel)
Supporting and visiting Israel – the homeland of the Jewish People
