Policies & Other Important Information

Arrival Time
School starts at 9:15 for all children.  Please accompany your primary grade (pre-K – 2) children to the appropriate room.  Intermediate grade students may enter the building unescorted.  Please encourage your children to be prompt, responsible and respectful by helping them arrive on time and prepared.

Books and Supplies
Most materials and books will be provided.   2nd – 7th grade children are expected to bring two pencils and their completed homework, if applicable.   We recommend that all religious school material be kept in one easily identifiable location.  You may purchase a Shir Hadash book bag for this purpose.  Replacement cost of lost books will be charged to the family.

Discipline
Our ultimate goal is the creation of a “holy community.”  Such a community is respectful, caring and safe.  Children will become partners in the creation of this community by helping to establish the rules necessary for its success.

Any student who cannot maintain respect or who makes the atmosphere unsafe or uncomfortable for others may be removed from the classroom.  At that point, parents will be called and asked to help mediate the situation.

Dismissal
All children will be dismissed at 12:25 p.m.  Parents of primary grade children should park and come into the building to pick up their children.  Children in 3rd – 7th grades may exit the building on their own.  To insure the safety of the children, parents are required to obey the traffic pattern for pick up established by the school.

Dress
Children should wear comfortable clothing appropriate to an active school setting.   We encourage those children who enjoy wearing kippot to do so.

Education Committee
The Education Committee oversees the activities of the school, creating policy, evaluating curriculum, reviewing procedures, spearheading innovations, and supporting all school-related programs.   The committee meets once a month.  Religious school parents are welcome and encouraged to join the committee.  For more information, contact Education Committee Co-chairs Dawn Allen and Lauren Tashma.

E-mail
Weekly communication between school and home is accomplished through the use of an electronic bulletin sent by the education director on Thursdays.  If you have an e-mail account, and are not receiving the electronic newsletter, please notify the education director: eddirector@shir-hadash.org.

Emergencies
In the case of any emergency involving your child, you will be notified immediately.  It is crucial that all emergency information on the registration form is up to date.  Contact the education director immediately if there are any changes.

Homework
We encourage Hebrew practice during the week.  Each teacher will establish his/her own policy regarding homework, depending on the grade and curriculum of the class, taking into account the individual needs of each student.

Lost and Found
Found articles will be displayed on a table in the entry hall.

Phone Conferences
Teachers will call the parents of each of their students in November and December.  The purpose of the phone conference is to further parent-teacher communication and cooperation.

Progress Reports
All students will receive a written progress report at the end of the school year.  Parents of students who are not meeting academic or behavior standards will receive a mid-year review when it becomes appropriate.

Room Parents
Each class will have one or two room parents.  The room parents will help with field trips, phone trees, class parties, and special activities.  Contact Emily Ascher if you wish to volunteer to be a room parent.

School Cancellations
The education director, in consultation with Rabbi Weiner-Kaplow and the Education Committee Chairperson, will determine if winter weather or other hazardous conditions warrant the closing of school.  In such an event, room parents will be notified and they in turn will contact parents to inform them of the cancellation.

Snacks
All students will have a snack break during the school day.  With the exception of 7th grade, parents are responsible for sending a healthy snack with their child(ren).  Snacks should never contain nuts.

Special Needs
Shir Hadash recognizes that every Jewish child is entitled to an appropriate Jewish education.  To meet this goal, our school is committed to working with any family with a child requiring a specialized educational program and to providing that program to the best of our ability.

Program modifications will be made on a case-by-case basis.  Special provisions may include remedial Hebrew assistance in our Hebrew Lab, partial or full-morning mainstreaming, assigning a teenage “shadow,” or referral to another community-based special education program.

Tzedakah
Please discuss the value of giving tzedakah with your child.  Tzedakah will be collected every Sunday.  At the end of the school year, the students will decide as a group where to donate their tzedakah money.
