Enrichment Programs Chugim (Electives)
The school day starts with chugim or electives for the 3rd – 7th graders. Each set of chugim will last for approximately 5 weeks. Parents, teachers and madrikhim will lead the chugim.
Parents wishing to offer a chug (elective) should submit a proposal to the education director. She will help with the organization and administration of the chug. Some of the chugim offerings include:
Arts Programs
· Arts & Crafts: Artistic expression enhances learning throughout the curriculum. Creating ritual objects to be used in the home is one focus of our arts program. Giving children the opportunity to express what they learn through art brings an important dimension to their learning.
Teacher: Bari Rosenbloom
· Music:: Music is used to enrich our curriculum throughout the grades. The program includes singing, playing percussion instruments, and creating music to interpret prayer. Children will learn a repertoire of holiday songs both traditional and new. In addition to the school program, children are invited to join our children’s choir, Kolit
Teacher: Cindy Michelassi
· Dance & Movement: Israeli folk dancing as well as modern dance interpretation of prayers is part of the Shir Hadash dance enrichment program. Yoga is used to help children learn the Hebrew letters through body movement. Dance is also combined with our music program to add another dimension of artistic expression.
Teacher: Rebecca Rice
Shuk Hadash (The New Israeli Market)
On Sunday, December 14th, 2008, the Hellenic Academy Auditorium will be transformed into an Israeli Marketplace. Created by the 7th grade class, our shuk (market) will include Israeli food, music, hand crafted jewelry and more. All children in the school will have the opportunity to experience the shuk, purchase food and crafts and have a wonderful Israel-inspired time.
Several days are set aside each year for family or parent education. Children and their parents usually love the opportunity to learn together in a creative, hands-on atmosphere. The family education days are in the planning process.
